Vet Alert: Dr. Davis is coming to Cat Island and will be in Port Howe (the old schoolhouse) on Friday, Jan. 22 and will be in Arthurs Town on the Saturday, Jan. 23rd. Spaying and neutering procedures are free, sponsored by the Cat Island Humane Society.
Due to problems at both north and south high schools, the Dog House Competition will be postponed until February 15th. A drawing will be held on Feb. 27th at our Annual Fun Day to determine the winners of the houses.
The Executive Board met and finalized the plans for the Cat Island Humane Society’s adoption shelter to be located in Knowles at Andrew Seymour’s home. Necessary materials will be purchased soon. Any labor involved will be voluntary and volunteers welcomed.
The goal of this project is to provide a well-cared-for healthy environment in which people can drop off and or adopt dogs. There will be a nominal fee charged for each drop-off to help defray the food costs. Spayings, neuters, worming and preventative shots will be offered at no cost. Feeding and care will be carried out by volunteers.
We are happy to announce that we have added Purina Deli-Cat food for our feline friends. A 14 lb. container is for sale for $30.00 member’s price and $35.00 to non-members. This helps to round out our inventory supplying food for dogs, cats, chickens and goats. Food is available at Danson King’s home in New Bight and at Boggy Pond in Arthur’s Town.
The Cat Island Humane Society will be hosting a General Meeting on Sat. November 7th at 12:30 pm at at the Starlight Restaurant in Smith Bay. Refreshments and soft drinks will be served.
We welcome the public and prospective members to discuss what we have been doing this year and to listen to any ideas which may help us improve the treatment and care of the island animals.
Following a two week postponement and being spared the wrath of tropical storm Erika, we were able to bring Dr. Davis back for our third clinic of the year.
Due to a late plane arrival we didn’t start until 11:00 A.M. in Port Howe, where we were met by the most enthusiastic and patient crowd we have seen to date. Many exams, shots and fourteen surgeries were performed. It was wonderful to see three of the puppies Dr. Davis wormed in May back for spaying and neutering. One dog who had been dropped off and awaiting surgery proved to be a little reluctant about the whole thing. He simply ran away!
It was much quieter in Arthur’s Town on Sat. Dr. Davis spayed three and neutered one dog. He surgically removed a fatty growth from another. Deworming, rabies shots and travel documents were issued. Dr. Davis spayed the rescue dog Andrew nursed back to health and has found a home for her. We love a success story!
All in all, a successful weekend for the Humane population. We offer a huge thanks to Dr. Davis and Andrew for their time. And, Amelia, thanks so much for the photos!
We are off to a great start this school year with our Dog House project. All the materials have been ordered and will be shipped next week, Thursday, August 27th. We plan to have them delivered to each school the same day in an effort to enable the students to begin when school opens.
We have included paint in the materials provided, so everyone is excited to see what the students produce this year. The contest will end on Friday, November 27th with judging to be held on Monday, November 30th.
